Simple Ways To Give Your Home A Cosier Feel

Creating a cosy home does not have to mean spending a fortune on new furniture or completely redecorating every room. Often, it is the smaller details that make a house feel warm, comfortable and inviting.

Whether you have just moved into a new property or simply feel that your home needs a little more personality, there are plenty of straightforward changes worth trying.

Start With Soft Furnishings

Cushions, throws and rugs can completely change the atmosphere of a room. They introduce texture and warmth while making hard surfaces feel softer and more comfortable.

In a living room, try layering a couple of different textures rather than choosing everything from the same range. Chunky knitted throws, woven cushions and soft rugs can work particularly well during the colder months.

Curtains can also make a room feel warmer, both visually and physically. If your windows currently feel bare, adding full-length curtains can instantly make the space feel more finished.

Pay Attention To Lighting

Bright overhead lighting is useful when you need to clean or work, but it is rarely the most relaxing choice in the evening. Instead, use several smaller light sources around a room.

A table lamp beside a sofa, a floor lamp in a darker corner or a small lamp on a sideboard can create pools of gentle light and make a room feel much more inviting.

Warm-toned bulbs are generally better suited to relaxing spaces than very cool, bright lighting. Candles and lanterns can also add atmosphere, provided they are used safely.

Give Your Rooms Some Personality

A home can feel strangely cold when everything is perfectly coordinated but there is little evidence of the people who live there. Photographs, artwork, books, plants and favourite objects can all help give a room character.

You do not need to display everything at once. A carefully chosen collection of personal items can have more impact than crowded shelves and surfaces.

Even something as simple as displaying a favourite photograph in a nice frame or placing a houseplant on an empty windowsill can make a room feel more lived-in.

Make Comfort The Priority

Perhaps the most important part of creating a cosy home is making it somewhere you actually want to spend time. Arrange furniture around conversation rather than simply pushing everything against the walls, keep frequently used items within easy reach and create comfortable spots for reading, relaxing or enjoying a cup of tea.

A cosy home does not need to look like a showroom. In fact, a few signs of everyday life are often what make a house feel like home.
